2013 Canadian Open Wheelchair Bonspiel was again a Great Success
Oct. 23-26, 2013

It was an exciting four days at the Richmond Curling Club from October 23 to 26, 2013, when the 7th Annual International Wheelchair Bonspiel - 2013 Canadian Open Tournament was hosted by the RCD there.

Congratulation to the Winners:

• Gold Medal Winner – Alberta
• Silver Medal Winner – Scotland
• Bronze Medal Winner – Canada
• 4th Place – BC

On October 23, the Opening Ceremony was spectacular when our Piper led the parade onto the ice. The seven teams were full of anticipation. There was a huge cheer when Mayor Malcolm Brodie of City of Richmond threw the ceremonious rock to officially open the competition.

This year everything went as planned and we had to give a great Thank You to the great contribution and assistance from Chief Umpires Scott and April Mol, Volunteer Coordinator Bob Boisvert, Bonspiel Organizing Committee Chair Vince Miele and all the Rock Cleaners who volunteered throughout the 4 days.

The Playoffs on October 26 were beyond exciting. The rivalry for the Gold Medal between Alberta and Scotland took them to a tie after the official game time and the championship outcome was decided by a draw to the button by each team. Everyone was holding their breath until the rock from Alberta came closer to the button and they won. 

For Closing and Award Ceremony, we brought all 7 teams to the River Rock Casino Resort to join the RCD 2013 Fundraising Gala – The British Invasion. Team Scotland was excited and even the skip of Edmonton Rocks was overjoyed of the theme, because he also originally came from Liverpool. All the teams received their recognition and awards at the Gala, from the mayor of the City of Richmond, Mayor Malcolm Brodie. It was a wonderful event, not only in its competitive spirits, but also the bonding between athletes is awesome.

Finally, special thank you to all the members of the Bonspiel Organizing Committee, Ceremony MC Joe Krapeic, Richmond Curling Club Chef Team and all the volunteers.
